Tony Robinson has sadly passed away

Friends,

There is some very sad news to report. Over the weekend we have lost a brother, Tony Robinson (we knew him as Anthony at school) . Tony struggled with mental illness for many years, and for the past few years has been helped enormously by his step-sister Mandy. Mandy is happy for us to let you know of his passing, and is adamant that Tony would want no secrecy about his death and to say that he took his own life because of battle with his mental illness. Such a sad loss of a genuine, kind bloke.

Tony's funeral service will be held next Tuesday 10 Ocotober 2006.
These details will apparently be posted in the Notices section of this Thursday's SMH but the outline of the service next is as follows:
12pm - Service at All Souls Church in Leichhardt
http://www.allsouls.net.au/About%20Us3.htm
Afterwards - the burial at Macqaurie Park Cemetry in Ryde
http://www.maccem.com.au/contact.htm

All are welcome - please let Ben Teh know at ben_g_teh@yahoo.com.au if you will be coming so he can help Mandy with the numbers.

Tony Robinson: “Blob”, “Pace Man”, “Brother”, “Robbo”. Loved to laugh, and to make you laugh, LOVED and played all sport, didn’t mind the odd 36 holes on the golf course, a great writer, a wit the equal of anyone at NSBH (which is saying something!), humble, cheeky, caring, irreverent, funny, gentle and generous. He was one of us.

I remember first meeting Robbo in year 7 when he was one of the trio known as Blob, Fluff (Pete Llewellyn) and Chook (Dave Hendy). Through high school, I don’t know how many hours he spent on the sporting field and the golf course, but I think it was most of them. There are a million funny Robbo moments. One is a live reenactment on the first hole at Lane Cove of the TV commentary when Jack Nicklaus sank what proved to be the decisive putt in the 1986 US Masters: “Maybe… maybe… Yes Sir!!” Another one is his perfect impression of Mr Butler’s famous blow ups in chemistry class. Robbo was always ready to see the funny side and share it with others, he craved it, but the deeply thoughtful and genuine side was never far away.

Robbo, mate, you made our lives richer and simply better. I miss you and wish you were here.

Spending just a few minutes with Tony last year when he came to the Annual NSBHS/Aloysius cricket match has been representative of many of the interactions I have had since getting this reunion thing underway. Tony seemed a guy for whom life had not turned out quite as he had planned, and there was a vulnerability that many of us now have, but that few if any of us showed at high school. Life had hurt him, and i could relate. It is tragic to have lost him. Peace to you, Blob.

I can't believe this news!! I will always remember with fond memories all the golf that I played with Blob - at Lane Cove, Castle Cove (his home course), Northbridge, Long Reef.....etc. I still remember his very slow and deliberate swing - Jack Nicklaus was his hero.

During the walk between shots, he would entertain me with commentary (laced with sarcasm of course) on the shots we just played.

Blob, you'll be missed at our reunion next year. RIP.

A true gent.
I saw Anthony for the first time in 5 or so years late last year - and his memory for the past, all the way back to infant school in Castle Cove, was so vivid.

In his junior club rugby days at Roseville on the wing, he was like the wind; and for a guy with a slighter frame than some, he never backed out of a tackle.

I'm really sad to hear this news.

Very sad to hear this news. I would like to have attended the service, but I am currently in London for the next few weeks.

Ben, it would be great if you could pass on my condolences to Tony's family.

I'm very sorry to hear that indeed.
Always bad news when a fellow traveller dies.
You can't help but reflect on how not everyone can keep up with the everydayathon, and that the way things are set up, some of us are going to fall through the cracks. That is some genuinely sad news.

Sorry Blob for waiting so my years to post this. But you were a true mate, full of comical renditions of real life golf situations mixed in with fantasy. My favourite line when you hit one near the pin at Castlecove GC. "ooh that was a poor shot, a poor shot indeed, for this future Castlecove junior champion" ha ha. Miss you mate, we had some fun times and you my friend were a true gentlemen and I will always remember your charismatic and humourous ways. I look forward to playing skins golf with you in the big sky my friend...
